I wanted to share a little project with you on a display case I'm making for the Taneytown History Museum. The bottom will be a basic wood box, while the top (what you see here) will be a Plexiglas or acrylic top. Many people assume that these tops are made by gluing the Plexiglas together, but they are not glued. Glue does not work well. Making a case top involves welding the Plexiglas with an acrylic cement. Smelly, as well as thinner than water, it presents it's challenges.

The joint where the 2 pieces of Plexiglas come together need to be tight. They also need to NOT be touching anything else. They must be pressing against each other AND suspended in the air. The cement is applied to the joint of the 2 pieces of Plexiglas and the cement chases the joint through capillary action. The cement melts the 2 pieces of Plexiglas and over the course of a number of hours the area where the Plexiglas melts becomes one, just like in welding steel.

With Plexiglas and the Acrylic Cement, the joint must be suspended because the cement, thinner than water, will chase anything that it can possibly chase. So we cannot tape the joint in order to weld it, or we'll have an imprint of the tape on the Plexiglas. The same goes for clamps, pieces of wood, and so on.

I give each joint a day to complete.

Wood is all around us. Fortunately, I have a number of folks who think of me when they have trees cut down on their properties. A friend of mine, Tim, came along to help with cutting and loading the wood. Mike, the owner, also provided a hand loading the wood onto my trailer. I’m always thankful for help.

We had trunks from one pin oak, one red maple and two honey locusts. The wood was wet and very heavy.

As we loaded we could see the back-end of the truck sinking and the tires of the trailer showing signs of a very heavy load. Before pulling out we moved a number of chunks of wood from the front of the trailer to the back to improve the balance of the load.

After the trailer was loaded, Mike commented that we were just half done. The truth is that getting the wood cut and loaded onto the trailer is not even close to half-way done. Once I got the trailer home I began cutting each piece down further into usable pieces. These photos were from Monday … it’s Friday night and I have 95% of the wood still on the trailer. This weekend I will cut a lot of this into blanks for specific pieces.

Here’s a quick look at a medium maple bowl, freshly roughed out on the new lathe. I roughed it out green – it had some moisture in it, but it was not very wet. The bark peeled off fairly easy … some of it flew off during turning. The result is a very pretty natural edge bowl. I wanted to show this to give you an idea of one of the challenges in turning natural edge bowls. Look at the crispness of the edge of the bowl as it spins. The edge is very sharp - when the speed is turned up to 800 - 1,200 RPM, those shard edges can you you quickly. So the warning on turning these bowls is to always be aware of where your body is in proximity to the spinning edge of that bowl.

WOOHOOOO!

I already had a few lathes in the wood shop… so you might wonder WHY in the world I would retire my Jet 1442 Lathe. The Jet 1442 Lathe still comes in handy, but the new lathe, having arrived a few weeks ago, will allow me to work with larger cuts of wood. This means I can turn larger projects!
My trusty Jet 1442 Lathe, pictured to the left, will get some rest now. I may be looking to sell the Jet in the near future.

My new lathe is a Laguna REVO 1836. A beefier lathe with more needed features to continue expanding my potential. I set up the new lathe this past weekend (after welding, clean up, re-arranging, inspecting the bees, wiring up the power for the lathe, etc., etc.) and had time to turn one bowl quickly. This is going to be FUN! What a sweet machine. 2 horse power via 1-phase to 3-phase converter, digital speed control.

Hi! I’m Douglas Heck!

I am a self-taught woodturner, local to Taneytown, Maryland.

I warmly welcome you to my new website. Here you can learn about me and how I got into woodturning, keep up with my projects in the wood shop, and shop for products that are expertly handcrafted with locally-sourced wood. Looking for something custom, or craving a project made from a special cut of wood? I take custom woodturning orders!

Thank you for joining me on this journey – please reach out any time, and connect with me online for the latest and greatest updates!

*Pictured to the left is Doug Heck, holding a custom designed award made for the recipients of the Philanthropist Of The Year award, granted by the Community Foundation of Carroll County. Every year, a local artist is commissioned to create a custom award to honor the recipients.
